Google drive is a service offered by the
infamous Google Corporation, the creators of the prolific Google search engine.
Google drive is an online and cloud based storage solution, it allows the user
to store all of their files online so that they can be accessed from any web
enabled device or smart phone. Inclusive storage has recently been made 3 times
bigger with the service offering 15GB of storage completely for free. Rumours
about Google drive started making an appearance as early as 2006, and by 2014
the service had a whopping 190 million users.
What are The Best Features?
A great benefit of Google drive is the
ability for multiple people and organisations to collaborate on the development
of a single file, without any physical presence required. Files can be accessed
by anyone that the owner permits, and multiple users can access the file at
once. This increases productivity and enables a multitude of different users to
work on the same file at the same time. It doesn’t matter what country the
users are located in or what time it is there; companies, agencies, and corporations
alike use the service to increase productivity and work efficiently.
Google docs is an intuitive add-on to Google
drive, it is a fully fledged office suite that enables users to collaborate on
files at the same time. Google docs
enables users to work on word documents, spread sheets, forms, and even
drawings. In fact Google drive enables
the use of almost all types of files used in digital creation, including
Photoshop and archived RAR files. The
inclusive 15GB of storage is shared across all Google platforms; Gmail, Drive,
Docs, and Google+ Images. Prices are
very competitive with 100GB of storage costing less than $2 per month, and 1TB
for less than $10 per month, the service also boasts huge data storage plans of
up to 30TB, for a very competitive monthly cost. The initial free storage was
once 1GB, followed shortly by 5GB, and then all plans were revised; resulting
in 15GB being offered for free.
Is There an App?
Yes, there’s a Google drive client for desktop
PC, mac, and smartphone. The client combines all of Google drive, docs, and Google
+ features in to one place. There is no
official client for Linux, but open source developers have created a suite
called Grivewhich allows essentially all features to be accessed on a Linux
computer. The installable software’s are
very nice to use; following Google’s new aesthetically pleasing trend of bright
colours and simplistic design.
